Q. What is the normal lifespan of a water heater?
It depends on the make, model and type of water heater. However, the typical tank water heater averages a lifespan of 8-12 years before it needs to be replaced.
Q. Can I replace my tank water heater with tankless?
Absolutely! In fact, we usually recommend this. A tankless water heater will lower the risk of your house flooding and will also save you bigtime on energy costs. When you go tankless, you will have to choose between gas and electric and the best choice depends on your situation. An electric tankless is less expensive to purchase, does not require as complex of an installation (and therefore less expensive to install), and is energetically more efficient (up to 98% efficient), but is not as powerful as a gas tankless and may not be suitable to heat water for, say, running the shower and doing dishes at the same time. However, electric may be perfect for handwashing stations in commercial restrooms, for example.

Q. How can I check my toilet to see if any of the parts are going bad?
To quality-test your toilet, take the lid off, place a few drops of food color in the water and let it sit. If any of the food color ends up in the toilet bowl, then you have an internal leak in your toilet. However, you may need a plumber to locate the problem.
Q. What should I do when the weather reaches freezing temperatures?
First, disconnect all outside hoses and cover them to protect them from cracking. If you live in an older home, turn your indoor faucets to a drip and leave them on drip until the outdoor temperature has risen above freezing. You can also open cabinet doors to exposed pipes so that the heat from your house helps keep pipes warm.
Q. How long does it take before pipes start to freeze?
It can take as long as 24 hours below freezing before ice starts to settle in pipes, but it’s best to not wait that long to take precautions.
Q. What do I do if I smell gas?
Call your gas company immediately. This could be a very dangerous situation.
